It's really pretty simple. Civility is politeness and courtesy. Most of us are taught to be civil when we're very young.

Respect includes the acknowledgement that someone or something has value. On rare occasions, egregious actions overwhelm the good someone has done, leading us to conclude that such a person doesn't deserve respect. But for most of us, showing respect is automatic.

In public discourse, including politics and media, civility and respect are too frequently forgotten.
