CNN and Fox News first reported today’s Supreme Court ruling as a rejection of the Obama White House’s individual mandate. They corrected it not long after.
Broadcast journalists will say that accuracy is always more important than speed. But they don’t live up to it.
Within hours, the public, if they switch between channels, won’t care a bit who had the story first. Reports on the mistake will probably last a bit longer.
Granted the SCOTUS decision was eagerly awaited and is a landmark. But if accuracy is #1, why not wait a few minutes to be sure you have it right?
