GOP debate starts, and continues with a bang

The CNN Republican debate in South Carolina tonight started boisterously today after moderator John King asked Newt Gingrich whether he wanted to respond to the ABC News interview with one of his ex-wives.

Gingrich reacted angrily, assailing King and his staff for that question and for making it the first one in the debate. He called it “as close to despicable as I can imagine.”

Gingrich also said, “I am tired of the media protecting Barack Obama by attacking Republicans.”

*** About reviving the economy, Mitt Romney said Pres. Obama is “practicing crony capitalism.” These comments are easy to throw out but tougher to back up. Sadly, both Republicans and Democrats make charges that are not easy to support.”

Romney also said the President puts “labor stooges on the NLRB.” Calling an appointee a stooge is demeaning, disrespectful and we suspect not the kind of language independent voters, especially, want to hear while deciding who to support.

*** When former Sen. Rick Santorum challenged Romney’s ability to end Obama care with an executive order, Romney acknowledged, “It doesn’t completely end Obama care” but it’a a step in that direction.

*** Gingrich said on health care that the reason Pres. Obama’s program allowed students to stay on their parents’ health policies is that the President “cannot get any jobs for them to buy their own insurance. That clearly was not the reason. *** Romney said Pres. Obama “played 90 rounds of golf while 20 million Americans are out of work.”  Presidents always have the latest technology to handle the nation’s business when they are on vacation. There seems no dispute that they deserve vacations. Pres. Obama has not taken the most vacations of any president at this point in his tenure.
